Very cute says I, a member of the Grimm family. Otto's funeral is definitely over the top, but that's how the roll in the land of the Sound of Music. With all due respect to the deceased, it was interesting to watch but ripe for a MST3K style commentary - unfortunately probably sacrireligious...

Thank you! And on Otto, it was impressive. All they needed was a glass casket and you get your fairy tale funeral.

Please nobody kiss the prince. It would scare the kiddies... :-)

I agree that "fairy tale" weddings are over-rated and scary. That's why we opted to get hitched by an attorney (as you remember :-). They are scary in their own right, but no pecking of the eyes or man-eating Orgresses.

Although, it can be said that attorneys are scary in their own right. But at least no faries or ogres were involved :-)

Perhaps folks should start using the adjective "Disney" along with "fairy tale".

Probably most folks anymore don't read the original versions of fairy tales. Personally I find them much more interesting. :)

Yeah, it's the Disneyfication of fairy tales that has started this misconception. Most of the time, if a fairy gets involved, things end up badly for the humans. Believe me, you don't want fairies anywhere close to your love story!

Are you referring to WEDDINGS or MARRIAGES?

It's been a while since I read any of Grimm's or Anderson's tales, but I seem to recall that the weddings themselves were rarely if ever described - the ceremony, that is.

It's true enough that many of the marriages you see in the original fairy tales could be pretty gruesome, as could some of the stories themselve. Disney was and is a great re-teller of tales. I don't know of any story, from Snow White to 101 Dalmations, that came through the Disney machine intact.

But I agree, applying that term "fairy tale" to any elegant or ostentatious wedding is itself a bit over the top.
