Highland River Melees and Pics

The pics from Highland River Melees are finally up. Go check them out!

But first, my recount in bullets:

  • It was good to see old friends again.

  • norse_isabel makes the best stuffed almonds ever.

  • anotheranon authorized rapier and got a chance to fight with us in the melees. I didn't get a chance to cross blades with her, but we have plans for doing so in the not so distant future (here's to hope).

  • Alric's prize was loads of fun, and he did great.

  • I freaked out as I got hit on my finger again, but it seems that there was no major damage. Range of motion was good this morning, so that was a great relief.

  • My fencing went rather well, and it got better as the afternoon wore off. (More on that later)

  • Morning Court was very nice, and Highland Foorde had the chance to say farewell to their Baronage and thank them for their service, and greet their new Baronage.

  • I didn't make evening Court, but I hear that Rowan got her Pearl, Martelle her Golden Dolphin, and Argh a Coral Branch. Squeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dom, Giacomo, Aedan and Connor put up a funny show at Court. Try looking at those pics in slide mode in my Smugmug album. They are worthy of a .gif file.

  • Vlad came up to play with us, and much fun was had by all. He's a really fun Prince. But then, we knew he'd be.

  • We were visited by either Bugs Bunny or Bun Bun as Alric was playing his prize. Look for the pic in the album.

Like I said before, I was pleased with my game yesterday. I believe that it got better as the afternoon wore off, and having the chance to play with folks I don't play very often is a wonderful opportunity for honing my game.

Am I where I want to be? No. Then again, I don't think that I will ever be where I want to be because every time I get somewhere, I make another goal for myself. This is true not only for my rapier game, but also for my fitness, my A&S, my work, you name it. However, I can honestly say that I feel I am making solid progress at least towards my short-term goals.

This got me thinking what has changed. I believe that part of it is my fitness program. I still practice rapier only once a week. That's all the time I have got for it. However, I do work out religiously every single morning and push myself as hard as I can. This is certainly paying off. If nothing else, I can outlast and/or outrun most of the young punks, and that ain't bad for this old broad. The point is yes, my game is improving, but the most important thing is that I am in the best shape of my life.

That is a combination I can live with any day of the week.

    Belfebe out.

I look forward to crossing blades with you as well :)

Re: your rapier game: from what I saw you were very deliberate and managed to stay in much longer than a lot of people - FWIW, the overall impression I got is that you go in with a plan and can alter that plan quickly as the circumstances change - that is no small thing. And I imagine your working out benefits your endurance incredibly!

And yeah - in any challenging pursuit, there is no finish line, just achieving the current step. Ain't it grand?

"He's a really fun Prince. But then, we knew he'd be."

I'm a firm believer that the primary job of Royalty is to entertain the populace. Countess Cyffaith had her gargoyle impersonation. Duchess Catarina could balance an orange on the top of her head. Both Duke Olaf and Duchess Aislinn did Middle Eastern Dance. Earl Daffyd's alternate persona is the infamous Count Guido, so that should tell you everything ;-) HRH Vlad is, well, VLAD. That says it all right there.

As HRH rather pointedly corrected me during the playing of Alric's prize, when formally introduced he is Prince Vladimir (not just Prince Vlad). Won't make that mistake again. ;-)

HRH has a formal name? Who'd have thunk it! ;-)

Actually, Viscount Wulfbrand Lurkr - aka "Wookie" - insisted that he not be called "Viscount Wookie" or "Sir Wookie." "Wookie" was his nickname, not his SCA name. I can completely understand keeping a distinction between the formal name and the less formal one.
