EZ-Pass Info

I have had my EZ-Pass since before it was called an EZ-Pass. Say, twelve, thirteen years ago? Never had a problem with it and I love it.

Last week though, I had a dentist's appointment and I used the Toll road. Of course, having my transponder, I check into the EZ-Pass lane and just go through. Much to my surprise, all the bells go off and the "Did Not Pay" thingy lights up.

I called the Smart Pass phone number today to figure out what happened. I give them my info, and they cannot find it anywhere.

Finally, after much toil and trouble, it comes out that my account has been closed because said transponder has not been used for the last six months.

In the end, my account was reactivated, and the fine that would have resulted from my apparent blowing off a toll booth straightened up.

This thing about cancellation of accounts without notification must be a new one. I hate it when this happens, and people should be warned about it.

So if you have an EZ-Pass for driving to Pennsic, and you have not been using it lately, check it out and make sure that it is current. You don't want to find out that your device doesn't work when you are in the middle of nowhere.

Really? My understanding - granted it's been a couple of years is that they cancel the account if you don't use it for 2 years not six months. Hrmmm...need to check and make sure LLT's is still active although I would think if you use one of the two on the same account it counts.

Yeah, I was surprised. I have definitely been using it for the past 2 years, even if probably not in a period of six months. Check yours out just in case :-)

Thanks for the reminder. We got a "balance low" light at the toll booth this weekend and needed to add some cash to our account.

Any time :-)

Mine is fine, as I have used the toll road recently for site visits. However, I'll need to remind the Navigator, since I don't know when he last used his EZ Pass.

Yeah, it would not be funny to get stuck with a cancelled EZ-Pass in the middle of Nowhere, PA. :-p

Both of our ez passes are on the same account.

Then you shouldn't have a problem. In my case, mine and Bob's are in separate accounts. They told me that when it is one account, then it would be fine.

UPS is the same way. If you don't use them in six months, they cancel your account. Very annoying.

My EZ-pass gets a good workout going to NJ two or three times a year, but the Dulles access road and Greenway happen regularly.

Yeah, I got it when I lived in Reston and commuted Downtown. At the time, I used it every day. However, when I moved to my current address, that ceased to be the case.

But it boggles the mind. To my knowledge, this was not something that used to happen.

Oh, well. I guess I'll have to make sure to give my EZ pass an exercise every once in a while to keep my account alive.

The humanity!
